Chelsea lifts English League Cup

Willian’s delivery from the right brushed Danny Rose’s head and fell invitingly to Terry whose shot went into the net after taking a deflection off Eric Dier.

Tottenham might have felt hard done by and the sense of injustice would have deepened on 56 minutes as Cesc Fabregas found Costa down the left and his firm strike took another wicked deflection, this time off Walker, who was credited with the own goal, to leave goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with no chance.

It seemed to take m88 the sting out of the Tottenham challenge and although Kane had a late half chance, it was Terry who typically snuffed out the threat with a timely tackle.

Mourinho, whose side is also well-placed to go through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, was clearly reveling in his latest success, his 21st career trophy as a manager.

Deflected efforts either side of halftime from Chelsea captain John Terry and leading scorer Diego Costa dashed Tottenham’s hopes in the all-London League Cup final.

Chelsea had suffered a chastening Christmas defeat to the same opposition in the English Premier League, with Harry Kane starring, but the promising young English striker was kept largely quiet in the showpiece occasion.

The first half saw Tottenham edge the possession and carry more of the attacking threat, with Dane Christian Eriksen’s free kick rattling the Chelsea crossbar.

But chances for either side from open play were in short supply and it was from a free kick that Chelsea went ahead just before the break. We have to kick on and we have got the league to focus on, but it’s a great day and a great win.”

Man City blow

Chelsea was also boosted by an earlier result in the EPL as its nearest title rival Manchester City was beaten 2-1 at Liverpool.

City had hoped to cut the gap at the top on Chelsea to just two points with a win at Anfield, but instead suffered a chastening reverse.

Jordan Henderson put Liverpool ahead with a thumping shot after just 11 minutes only for Edin Dzeko to draw City, defending the EPL title, level midway through the first half.

Liverpool, looking to boost its own chances of Champions League football next season, dominated after the break and deservedly took three points after Philippe Coutinho scored a superb late winner with a curling shot which flew past Joe Hart.

Chelsea clinches EPL title - CNN.com

Manchester City beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 later in the afternoon, but the three points took the west London side into an unassailable advantage over the defending champion and third-placed Arsenal.

Fittingly, it was PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard who scored the only goal of the match just before halftime after winning a penalty.

It was not without controversy, as there appeared to be very little contact when the Belgian international went sprawling in the area under a challenge from James McArthur.

Hazard scores winnerHazard got up to take the spot kick, his weak effort was saved by Julian Speroni, but he scored with a header on the rebound.

It was Hazard’s only miss from ten penalties he has taken in the EPL this season, but his 14th goal of the campaign was the crucial statistic and enough to take Jose Mourinho’s men over the winning line.

Read: Chelsea battles to goalless draw at Arsenal

In common with recent Chelsea displays, including the goalless draw at m88 Arsenal last weekend, the emphasis was on the result rather than open and attacking football and there was little second half goalmouth action.

For Mourinho, it was his third EPL title with Chelsea and first since his return to the club at the start of the 2013-14 campaign.

Earlier this season, Chelsea took the English League Cup, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final at Wembley.

It was revenge for a 5-3 beating at White Hart Lane on New Year’s Day, a rare hiccup in a triumphant league season.

The goals of Diego Costa, many of them assisted by fellow pre-season signing Cesc Fabregas, took Chelsea into an early lead in the title race with the other challengers unable to keep pace.

But it has been Hazard who has proved the ultimate star, winning the acclaim of his fellow EPL players for his sparkling performances.

Terry condolences to Ferdinand”We deserve to be champions, and everyone at Chelsea is happy today,” he said.

“The manager (Mourinho) gives me a lot of feelings and I can play my best football on the pitch which is the most important thing,” he added

Captain John Terry, the lynchpin of the Chelsea defense, particularly in the title run-in, broke off from the celebrations to send his condolences to former England defensive partner Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand’s wife, Rebecca Ellison, died of breast cancer at the age of 34 Friday.

“On behalf of myself and everyone at Chelsea, we send our condolences to Rio Ferdinand and his family.”

Terry was banned for four games by the English FA in 2012 for racially abusing Ferdinand’s brother Anton in a match against Queens Park Rangers.

Manchester City’s title hopes had receded in recent weeks, but weathered a spell of early Tottenham pressure at White Hart Lane to claim a victory which improves its chances of claiming second spot.

EPL top scorer Sergio Aguero broke the deadlock in the first half for his 22nd league goal of the season and City maintained its lead after a series of fine saves from Joe Hart.

Napoli thrashes MilanIn Serie A, AC Milan’s poor season continued with a 3-0 defeat at fourth-placed Napoli, losing defender Mattia De Sciglio to a red card after 50 seconds.

He fouled Marek Hamsik to concede a first minute penalty but goalkeeper Diego Lopez saved Gonzalo Higuain’s spot kick.

It took three second half goals in six minutes from Hamsik, Higuain and Manolo Gabbiadini to win the game for Rafa Benitez’s team to stay in the hunt for a Champions League slot.

Milan is 10th and way outside the Europa League places.

Off the pitch, Thai tycoon Bee Taechaubon has issued a statement claiming he has reached a deal to take over the club from Silvio Berlosconi, but this has not been confirmed by Milan.

Earlier, Roma leapfrogged Lazio into second place after a 2-0 win over in-form Genoa.

Until today I cannot comprehend how the events have unfolded in front of our very eyes and this game is certainly the one to forget for Rossoneri fans all over the world.

It is fair to say that Liverpool were easily outclassed by the supreme m88 Milan side, who were cruising 3-0 at half time. Dudek has excelled throughout the game but he truly became a hero by saving penalties from Andrea Pirlo and Andriy Shevchenko in the famous shoot out.

Liverpool: Gerrard 54, Smicer 56, Alonso 59. One could never forget watching every Milan fan`s idol Paolo Maldini tearing off his looser`s medal in despair. At the other hand it has to be the most remarkable comeback ever witnessed, and Liverpool truly deserved to be regarded as extraordinary.

Liverpool 3 – Milan 3 (AET, Liverpool won on penalties)

Milan: Maldini 1, Crespo 39, 44. No one in their wildest dreams could have imagined that Liverpool had it in them to sensationally overturn this game and clinch the unlikely victory.

(Of course this story wouldn`t be complete without mentioning Milan`s revenge in the 2007 final in Athens, when finally some pride has been restored.)

One of the biggest heartache any Milan fan ever had to endure came on the night of the 25th of May 2005. Who could`ve blamed him?

In the second half within seven minutes the Rossoneri dream was over and despite a sublime performance in extra time, Milan were unable to capitalize on their dominance. Finding The Best Winning College Basketball Picks

If you watch enough seasonal action, all around the NCAA, you will have a good set of picks by the time the NCAA tournament comes through and your bracket will be pristine. You just have to make sure that you’re following a variety of teams and watching the way they react to the ball in winning and losing.. Many times, it’s small schools from areas like Spokane, Washington or somewhere in the middle of the country to get into the Final Four and really shake up the college world. However, savvy gamblers will know that when college basketball picks are in, the upset card is possible. In order not to be surprised, make sure that you look for teams that have been on the bubble for quite sometime and look for them to prevail. If you can find a good overall defense compared to offensive plays, then you might have reason to believe that they can probably go far, the reason being is that defense wins games when they are so close. For instance, look for a team’s defensive record against others. Look for this, and then make sure that you compare them to a team where they might have trouble with, and you’ll see green as you pick up the money from placing bets with them. You’ll know these teams by how they handle themselves losing in the first half, only to come out in the second like a house on fire. It’s the veterans of college that don’t go straight to the NBA that seem to make a serious go at the championship before they leave. You will often times see a squad full of older players make a lot of noise going into the finals of any major tournament, including NCAA. Look for strong defenses to go far and pick your selections based on these things. Often times the top seeded teams in the country don’t make it past the first few rounds, and while some narrowly escape defeat, all it takes is for one scrappy squad to throw up 3 pointers on a good run, to topple a giant. Finding the best winning college basketball picks is daunting, and for some it’s a painstaking task, but for those that look deeper than the stats, real greatness happens. This is especially true for those that have maxed out their eligibility and will be moving on to either the NBA or a chosen career path based on their degree.

When you look at teams on paper, many match up great, however, when you start to peel away things from an individual player’s perspective you can start to see where a team could prevail or collapse. Watch out for this, because it will come up and surprise you and the world.

Every year millions of people place their bets on the big NCAA Basketball tournament that happens annually, and every year there are major upsets and people lose their money when putting faith into the #1 team in the nation.

The upset card is pulled in NCAA basketball a lot.

Another great tip is to look for standout seniors. When you have two evenly matched offensive powerhouses, defense and full court press often times ends up becoming the easiest way to win. If there is a squad that has gone to the finals many times and hasn’t won yet, but have a group of seniors that could tip the scales into their favor, bet on them. That’s why college basketball picks are hard to figure out compared to the NBA, there is a lot of different factors to consider Read More

Don't Bet on It: Sports Gambling in America

For some, the greatest joy comes from gambling on the uncertain outcomes of these contests. They have been steadfast in opposition to the spread of legalized sports betting, most recently with regard to New Jersey’s effort to resuscitate Atlantic City by following the Nevada “sports book” model. Alcohol continues to cause much more harm to society than illegal narcotics, but we learned the hard way that Prohibition generated far more problems than it solved. Perhaps fair-minded individuals will see the proposal for what it is — an effort to respond to reality and minimize some of the unfortunate consequences of having to place bets with a bookie in violation of the law. We are now experimenting with legalizing marijuana for recreational use. It is ubiquitous. To recognize the reality that hundreds of billions of dollars are bet annually — and illegally — on sports is an enormous breakthrough even if the NBA is the only sport to recognize the fact. Of course, gambling depends upon the games remaining unfixed. Professional sports think that gambling means that their games will not be decided on the merits, that fixers will invade their enterprises and cause spectators and fans to lose interest in patronizing their entertainment businesses.

This Blogger’s Books and Other Items from…

Gambling on sporting events is legal throughout most of the world. I would be surprised if the other commissioners follow Silver’s lead, but they will be asked. At the same time, all team sports have discovered the marketing advantages of adopting fantasy games, some of which approach sports gambling when a participant can chose a new team each week. What Silver has done is to present the issue for public discussion.

There can be little question that sports gambling is a vice — much like drinking and playing the lottery. The sports establishment is vigilant in protecting the integrity of the product, and it will remain so if gambling is legalized, regulated and taxed.

Gambling on professional sports will go on whatever we do. The availability of gambling online makes that easy to accomplish. However, we have passed the point of trying to decide whether gambling on sports provides some sort of benefit to society. So far, the Rocky Mountain high has not caused Denver to rise about its mile limit. It is a courageous position for a sports commissioner to take. No one has suggested that this fact of the sporting life be abolished, even if it were possible. Were this to be enacted, state sports gambling would spread like the lottery.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s op-ed in the New York Times calls upon Congress to change the nation’s laws to adopt a federal framework that allows states to authorize betting on professional sports. We will see this trend continue.

. Few turn on the games, especially football, without knowing the betting line. Only five states do not have a state lottery, but even some of those states have casino gambling.

Adam Silver’s approach calls for federal legislation that would allow states to decide whether they would authorize sports gambling.

What then are the chances that the other sports leagues and the politicians will go along with Adam Silver’s proposal? In the short run, I would not bet on it. There is no reason to think that were Congress to give its consent in a fairly short period of time we would see a “sports book” in almost every jurisdiction. They should come prepared with an answer.

We have entered a new phase of American history where some folks have begun to realize that prohibiting certain vices is foolish or just ineffective. Adam Silver is right. Once the states impose their regulations and their taxation on this activity, gambling on professional sports in America will be universal.

We now await input from the commissioners of the football, baseball and hockey leagues. It is time to legalize, regulate and tax it.

How will politicians react to Silver’s proposal? If President Obama likes the idea — he dutifully fills out his bracket each March on the NCAA basketball tourney — then for sure the Republican majorities will oppose any change in the law Read More

How to Bet Basketball - A Beginner's Guide

But say the point spread will make the Celtics a 10-point favorite.

How to Bet BasketballOf the four major sports, basketball is one of the easiest to bet on. Even if you correctly pick five out of six games, a parlay or teaser wager is still a loss.

Both wagers are described in more detail at How to Bet Parlays and How to Bet Teasers.

Betting basketball isn’t difficult and it typically ranks second in terms of betting dollars behind football. Along with football, basketball use the point spread for wagering on sides (teams), as well as an over/under number. For a more detailed explanation of totals see Introduction to Totals.

Essentially, a total is the predicted combined score of the two teams playing. If the Celtics win by exactly 10 points, the bet is a push, or a tie, and no money changes hands.

When betting against the point spread, bettors are asked to lay 11-to-10 odds, which means that they risk $11 to win $10. But because some teams are given a better than 50-percent chance of winning, money line wagers are made using odds, so that if you bet on the team expected to win you will be asked to risk considerably more than you stand to win. In parlays and teasers bettors must correctly predict the winners of two or more games. Bettors wagering on the over would win their bets if the total combined score was 189 or greater, while bettors wagering on the under would win their bets if the combined total score was 187 or fewer points. Again, if the combined score is exactly 188 points, the bet is considered a push, or a tie, and no money changes hands.

Boston Celtics -300

New York Knicks +240

7 Steps to Organize Your Craft Room

If the Celtics are playing the Knicks, most bettors would bet on the Celtics to win the game. The team expected to win gives, or lays, points to the team expected to lose for betting purposes.

Just as with the point spread, bettors are asked to lay 11-to-10 odds and risk $11 to win $10 on each over/under wager.

By Allen Moody

In our hypothetical game between the Knicks and the Celtics, the over/under number might be 188. One is the money line wager, which is a bet on the winner of the game without the point spread. A number will be posted and bettors have the option of wagering more than the predicted total points will be scored (over), or less than the predicted total points will be scored (under).

With the point spread, the team expected to win will be called the favorite, while the team expected to lose will be called the underdog. Many fans find that dealing with the point spread, or with totals, easier than using the money line.

What this means is that the Celtics have to win by 11 or more points for its bettors to win their bet, while those betting on the Knicks would win their wagers if the Knicks won the game or lost by nine points or less.

All sports betting was done with money lines at one point, but with too many people betting on the obvious favorites all of the time, the point spread was introduced and sports betting hasn’t been the same since.

Parlays and TeasersThe other types of wagers involving basketball come in the form of parlays and teasers, which are sometimes called exotic bets. For a more detailed explanation of the point spread see Introduction to Point Spreads.

Money Line WagersWhile betting against the point spread or on totals make up the vast majority of basketball wagers, bettors also have several other betting options available to them. The extra dollar is essentially the bookie’s fee for accepting our wagers.

TotalsThe second most popular method of wagering on basketball is in betting totals, also known as over/unders. If you know how to bet on football, you already pretty much know how to bet on basketball.

The most common method of betting basketball involves the point spread, which is a handicap the sportsbooks impose on one team to make both teams equal in terms of betting. This is how the bookies and sportsbooks make their money. More about money line betting can be found at Introduction to Money Lines.

The money line odds on a game will look something like:

What this means is that bettors taking the Celtics are asked to put up $30 to win $10, while those believing the Knicks will win are asked to risk $10 to win $24.. If I bet $11 on the Celtics and you bet $11 on the Knicks, the bookie collects $22 between us, but only returns $21 to the winner. On parlays, bettors have the option of betting against the point spread or using the money line, while teasers are made using the point spread and players can adjust the point spread in their favor.

The one catch about parlays and teasers is that all of your teams must win or the entire bet is a loss Read More

Sports :: How to Win at Betting: Sports Gambling Winning Percentage, What You Need to Know

And as is the case with the Arkansas-based giant, many times this will be more profitable than being extremely selective and doing a small amount of volume, even if the mark-up is higher.

With baseball season coming back in about 4 months, many sports gamblers will be seeing ads from different sports services claiming winning percentages of 65-percent for baseball, and that’s entirely possibly, but what the services aren’t saying is that the majority of their selections were favorites of -200 or more, turning that 65-percent handicapping into a losing proposition.

Making it more difficult for sports bettors is that some sports services will claim to have won 200 units in a particular sport, but don’t mention that they release 10- or 20-unit plays, along with several 100-unit “locks” at the end of the year if things aren’t going so well and they need something to base next year’s advertising on.

For the bettors that do their own handicapping, however, units won is really the only thing you should be concerned with, as that ultimately is going to translate into the bottom line. The only statistic that sports bettors should be concerned with is units won, which is the amount of profit, or loss, they have over time, and not worry nearly as much about winning percentage. In the question above, it would be much better to be a 55-percent handicapper if you were playing 150 games a month, as opposed to a 60-percent handicapper playing one game a day. A winning percentage of 55-percent sure doesn’t sound as sexy as a 60-percent handicapper, but if your volume of plays is high enough, it can certainly be much more profitable.

. At the end of the month, the 55-percent handicapper would have gone 83-67 for a gain of 9.3 units, while the 60-percent handicapper would have gone 18-12 for a profit of 4.8 units, so the 55-percent handicapper has made nearly twice as much.

If somebody were to ask you if you would rather be a 60-percent handicapper or a 55-percent handicapper, which would you choose? The obvious answer is that it’s better to be a 60-percent handicapper, but that isn’t necessarily true.

The 55-percent handicapper is using what is commonly referred to as the Wal-Mart Approach, which is to have a lot of volume with the expectation of grinding out a small profit Read More

12 Olympic Sports That Have Ceased To Exist

Basically, you hit the ball with your hand similar to handball or volleyball. Six different water skiing events took place including figure skiing, slalom and skiing for both men and women. France managed to clean up all 7 gold medals. 6.Power Boating

Power boating is another one of the sports that if it made it out of the early 1900s probably would have grown to be a pretty big hit in the modern day. The three events were the 8-Meter Class, the Under 60 Foot Class and the Open class. If you don’t know what polo is, it is basically a team sport played on horseback where competitors try to drive a wooden or plastic ball into the opponents net using a giant wooden mallet. You can use your hand, a bat, or some form of racquet. The main difference that I can see, is the racquet is 30.5 inches long, which is quite the long racquet. Because these two sports were only included in the Summer Olympics as demonstrations, they only get ‘honorable mentions’.

Water Skiing

Water Skiing briefly made an appearance in the Olympics in 1972 but only as a demonstration sport. If you pull one member of their team across the line, you win; basically a giant brute strength competition. When only four teams showed up to compete (Belgium, Holland, Great Britain and France) there wasn’t exactly the level of competition some would have desired. Each team consists of four riders; pretty exciting huh?

Honorable Mentions

There have been a couple other sports that have popped up, but they only went as far as becoming demonstration sports. The major difference between Roque and Croquet is that Roque is played on a rolled sand court with a permanent boundary and the wickets are permanently anchored to the ground. Three events took place and in each event, two competitors started the race but only one finished. Back in the early 90′s roller hockey was becoming immensely popular, and as a result it had its year in the lime light as a demonstration event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Maybe one day another power boating event will resurface!

2.Rugby

Rugby, as popular of a sport as it is today was successfully removed from the Olympics after just four appearances. Cricket made an appearance in the 1900 Olympics but its existence in the Olympics was very short lived. This sport has such a small following that nobody even knows the score on the only match ever played in Olympic history. It seems like I’m not the only one who had a preconceived notion that Golf was not an entertaining sport to watch. The name was achieved by removing the first and last letter from Croquet. They should have drug tested those crazy French!

10.Jeu de paume

Don’t worry, you are not the only one out there who has never heard of Jeu de Paume, I actually had to Google it! Jeu de paume eventually evolved into Tennis, but in its earliest state it was more or less lawn tennis played without racquets. It consists of two walls and a variety of different means to hit the ball off these walls. Any sport similar to football, with more violence and less stoppage of play is a great sport in my book. There are many interesting Olympic facts but this article is dedicated to remembering the different sports that have passed on to greener pastures. As a result of people falling asleep while watching the extremely action packed sport of golf, the event only lasted in the Olympics for two years; 1900 and 1904. It is fast paced, exciting and let us not forget VIOLENT. If you translate jeu de paume to english, it literally means ‘game of palm’; those French are so clever when it comes to naming sports! Anyways, this event lasted for one Olympic year, 1908, and then vanished into the abyss never to be spoken of by an English speaking human again.

12.Roque

Roque is the bastardized American version of Croquet. Players run up and down a field trying to put a hard rubber ball into the net. 10 Competitors showed up to play, nine of them from France and one from Belgium. The sport was never consistently an Olympic sport but was an event in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924. I’m not quite sure why they stopped including this sport, but only 8 teams have ever actually competed. Honestly, what is not to like? Unfortunately, the first year the sport was a competition sport (1904), only three teams showed up to compete. Belgium and Holland eventually pulled out leaving Great Britain to battle France for the championship! Great Britain wound up winning the two matches and for some reason was only awarded the silver medal, while France was honored with the Bronze. It is very similar to squash with a few differences. The sport ceased to exist in the Olympics after its sole appearance in Barcelona.

11.Rackets

Rackets is an indoor racquet sport mainly practiced in the United Kingdom. In 1908 even less countries had the balls to take the punishment Lacrosse had to offer and only two teams showed up to compete. All members of the team grab the rope and when the event begins you pull as hard as possible in an attempt to pull your opponents across the line. Or maybe I can’t, and that is probably the reason those responsible for the Olympics axed croquet after its sole appearance in 1900. This sport quickly fizzled out after its sole appearance in the 1908 Olympics when the only Country that brought a team to compete was Great Britain. It is also a popular event on some TV game shows. The only thing we know is that Spain beat France and as a result was awarded the gold medal. If anybody knows somebody on the Olympic committee and can get Rugby brought back do us all a favor and give him/her a shout!

How To Master Sports Betting

If you are going to do it you need to do it properly and master it, it means you are completely organized and focused. It could provide great insight as to predicting what will occur.

Look for value bets. You can’t let the highs and lows affect you too much.

In the case of team sports, injuries are important. Upsets are always going to happen but see when it makes the most sense when to go for that and when not to. So do yourself a favor and swear off them. Thus when you are doing well, you will still be focused and when you aren’t doing so well you won’t be thinking that it’s the end of the world. Over time, you will learn what it should be that you should be paying attention to.

Because of this point, it is probably better if you steer clear from any matches involving the teams that you like. This means that when you place your bets you need to be thinking clearly and concisely. On the flip side, you shouldn’t bet against a team because someone you don’t like roots for that team. For instance, if you are pretty certain that a side is going to win and they are getting good odds for this than take this. You will be better off for doing so in the long run.

Speaking of the long run, this is what you should be focused on. Also look into how sides perform the week after doing certain travel. You shouldn’t favor a team because they are the team your best friend supports. It’s all about accumulating winnings. It doesn’t matter if it is pretty or not.

Sports betting is an easy way to make a tough living. Anything less than this and it is going to be a disaster. So if you suffer a bad break along the way, just remember it goes with the territory. Hopefully this kind of thinking will keep you grounded. It is only going to place you in a difficult position and as much as you might think it won’t be, your decision making ability is going to be compromised. What is the point of drowning yourself in statistics and research for what you could just as easily decided with a flip of the coin? So you need to sift through it all and just take the morsels here and there which are really important and make a difference. Business is business and you need to be concentrating on who is going to win regardless of who likes and who doesn’t like which team.. You don’t want to lose money just because you weren’t on top of your game.

The most important thing is that you need to take emotion out of the equation. You want to know who trained and who didn’t. The weather conditions also make a difference as they do in horse racing. Travel is a factor such as when East Coast sides travel to the West Coast and vice versa. Information and doing your homework is important, but you don’t want to full into the trap of information overload Read More

“Prior to Gallup’s introduction in 1936, newspapers had little to report about the election horse race other than the betting markets,” Strumpf explains. The papers’ sources were bookies who had agents at every stump and whistle-stop to gather intel and quantify popular sentiment. The betting markets also were correct on the winner in each of the 50 states. Halfway through Election Day 2004, various exit polls showed Kerry with the lead. The Internet has given rise to new forums, however. “Also polls tend to reflect what people are thinking at a given moment, versus a forecast of what will happen on election day — post-convention bounces, for instance.”

“Our markets recognize that Romney probably needs to win Ohio to beat Obama,” Wolfenden says. The election is more of a marathon, a four-year race. They take voter fraud into their metrics.

. So while Romney may lead in the polls, and he may have flipped a number of other key states — such as Florida, Virginia, Colorado — to his side of the ledger, our markets appear to believe that without Ohio he can’t get it done.”

Ironically, polls sent gamblers to the sideline. “The polls ask who you’re going to vote for — a question that requires an emotional response. “When scientific polls came along, newspapers had something to report other than markets they were oftentimes uncomfortable with.”

Gamblers’ success in this arena is nothing new. As of this writing, betting at the three biggest prediction markets is as follows: Betfair has Obama with a 64 percent chance to win to Romney’s 36 percent; Intrade has the president at 58 percent; and the Iowa Electronic Markets have the president at 59 percent. “In a match race between two horses over a course of one-and-a-quarter miles, a lot of things can go suddenly wrong. Between 1884 and 1940, the bettors erred on just one of sixteen elections, Wilson’s 1916 upset of Hughes. “Relative to the polls, the betting markets have to think hard about what they’re saying since they are putting their money at stake,” he said. One of these facts is the Electoral College, which isn’t accounted for in polls.”

I don’t like uncertainty. “And so the price for Obama to be reelected has closely tracked his probability of winning Ohio. The prediction markets like Intrade cut through all this and give us a single number to focus on.”

Intrade’s scoreboard, updated in real-time here:

Before the 2008 election, I spoke to Koleman Strumpf, a University of Kansas economics professor who tracks betting trends. They were also on the money with 48 of 50 states.

The same discomfort led to states relegating such gamblers to outlaws. The current presidential polls — Gallup with Romney leading by three percent, CBS with Obama up by two percent, aggregators split on whose nose is ahead — are a hotbed of uncertainty. At approximately 3-2 odds, is the outcome in this election any more certain than that of a horse race?

In 2004, Gallup failed to forecast the winner of the popular vote for president — for the second straight election. Short of a huge scandal, I can’t see an outcome other than Obama’s reelection.”

“The answer highlights one of the main differences between the polls and markets like Intrade,” Intrade’s exchange operations manager Carl Wolfenden told me.

Added Paulick Report editor Ray Paulick, one of America’s top horseracing handicappers and a political prediction markets aficionado, “Gamblers have more experience with cheaters.

Still, the consensus among gamblers isn’t as strong as in the last two elections. Oddschecker shows bookmakers to be even more bullish on Obama.

Strumpf adds: “I think the big message in this election cycle is that polls are giving conflicting answers, and unless you are willing to look at several state-level polls, it is hard to make sense of it all. Nor do polls take into account intangibles like how each state’s secretary of state factors in or systems within a state designed to eliminate voters.”

“I much prefer this kind of 60-40 probability than I would in a horse race,” says Paulick. Polls don’t. Intrade asks who you think will win — a rational question that requires someone to look at the facts and real world events, such as polls, debates, speeches, gaffes, scandals and crises. Meanwhile 91 percent of bettors on Betfair.com had their money on Bush. In presidential races beginning in 1896, the New York Times, Sun, and World provided daily betting quotes. Fortunately there are veritable election oracles I can turn to instead: gamblers.
