Chelsea lifts English League Cup

Willian’s delivery from the right brushed Danny Rose’s head and fell invitingly to Terry whose shot went into the net after taking a deflection off Eric Dier.

Tottenham might have felt hard done by and the sense of injustice would have deepened on 56 minutes as Cesc Fabregas found Costa down the left and his firm strike took another wicked deflection, this time off Walker, who was credited with the own goal, to leave goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with no chance.

It seemed to take m88 the sting out of the Tottenham challenge and although Kane had a late half chance, it was Terry who typically snuffed out the threat with a timely tackle.

Mourinho, whose side is also well-placed to go through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League, was clearly reveling in his latest success, his 21st career trophy as a manager.

Deflected efforts either side of halftime from Chelsea captain John Terry and leading scorer Diego Costa dashed Tottenham’s hopes in the all-London League Cup final.

Chelsea had suffered a chastening Christmas defeat to the same opposition in the English Premier League, with Harry Kane starring, but the promising young English striker was kept largely quiet in the showpiece occasion.

The first half saw Tottenham edge the possession and carry more of the attacking threat, with Dane Christian Eriksen’s free kick rattling the Chelsea crossbar.

But chances for either side from open play were in short supply and it was from a free kick that Chelsea went ahead just before the break. We have to kick on and we have got the league to focus on, but it’s a great day and a great win.”

Man City blow

Chelsea was also boosted by an earlier result in the EPL as its nearest title rival Manchester City was beaten 2-1 at Liverpool.

City had hoped to cut the gap at the top on Chelsea to just two points with a win at Anfield, but instead suffered a chastening reverse.

Jordan Henderson put Liverpool ahead with a thumping shot after just 11 minutes only for Edin Dzeko to draw City, defending the EPL title, level midway through the first half.

Liverpool, looking to boost its own chances of Champions League football next season, dominated after the break and deservedly took three points after Philippe Coutinho scored a superb late winner with a curling shot which flew past Joe Hart.

Chelsea clinches EPL title -

Manchester City beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 later in the afternoon, but the three points took the west London side into an unassailable advantage over the defending champion and third-placed Arsenal.

Fittingly, it was PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard who scored the only goal of the match just before halftime after winning a penalty.

It was not without controversy, as there appeared to be very little contact when the Belgian international went sprawling in the area under a challenge from James McArthur.

Hazard scores winnerHazard got up to take the spot kick, his weak effort was saved by Julian Speroni, but he scored with a header on the rebound.

It was Hazard’s only miss from ten penalties he has taken in the EPL this season, but his 14th goal of the campaign was the crucial statistic and enough to take Jose Mourinho’s men over the winning line.

Read: Chelsea battles to goalless draw at Arsenal

In common with recent Chelsea displays, including the goalless draw at m88 Arsenal last weekend, the emphasis was on the result rather than open and attacking football and there was little second half goalmouth action.

For Mourinho, it was his third EPL title with Chelsea and first since his return to the club at the start of the 2013-14 campaign.

Earlier this season, Chelsea took the English League Cup, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final at Wembley.

It was revenge for a 5-3 beating at White Hart Lane on New Year’s Day, a rare hiccup in a triumphant league season.

The goals of Diego Costa, many of them assisted by fellow pre-season signing Cesc Fabregas, took Chelsea into an early lead in the title race with the other challengers unable to keep pace.

But it has been Hazard who has proved the ultimate star, winning the acclaim of his fellow EPL players for his sparkling performances.

Terry condolences to Ferdinand”We deserve to be champions, and everyone at Chelsea is happy today,” he said.

“The manager (Mourinho) gives me a lot of feelings and I can play my best football on the pitch which is the most important thing,” he added

Captain John Terry, the lynchpin of the Chelsea defense, particularly in the title run-in, broke off from the celebrations to send his condolences to former England defensive partner Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand’s wife, Rebecca Ellison, died of breast cancer at the age of 34 Friday.

“On behalf of myself and everyone at Chelsea, we send our condolences to Rio Ferdinand and his family.”

Terry was banned for four games by the English FA in 2012 for racially abusing Ferdinand’s brother Anton in a match against Queens Park Rangers.

Manchester City’s title hopes had receded in recent weeks, but weathered a spell of early Tottenham pressure at White Hart Lane to claim a victory which improves its chances of claiming second spot.

EPL top scorer Sergio Aguero broke the deadlock in the first half for his 22nd league goal of the season and City maintained its lead after a series of fine saves from Joe Hart.

Napoli thrashes MilanIn Serie A, AC Milan’s poor season continued with a 3-0 defeat at fourth-placed Napoli, losing defender Mattia De Sciglio to a red card after 50 seconds.

He fouled Marek Hamsik to concede a first minute penalty but goalkeeper Diego Lopez saved Gonzalo Higuain’s spot kick.

It took three second half goals in six minutes from Hamsik, Higuain and Manolo Gabbiadini to win the game for Rafa Benitez’s team to stay in the hunt for a Champions League slot.

Milan is 10th and way outside the Europa League places.

Off the pitch, Thai tycoon Bee Taechaubon has issued a statement claiming he has reached a deal to take over the club from Silvio Berlosconi, but this has not been confirmed by Milan.

Earlier, Roma leapfrogged Lazio into second place after a 2-0 win over in-form Genoa.

Until today I cannot comprehend how the events have unfolded in front of our very eyes and this game is certainly the one to forget for Rossoneri fans all over the world.

It is fair to say that Liverpool were easily outclassed by the supreme m88 Milan side, who were cruising 3-0 at half time. Dudek has excelled throughout the game but he truly became a hero by saving penalties from Andrea Pirlo and Andriy Shevchenko in the famous shoot out.

Liverpool: Gerrard 54, Smicer 56, Alonso 59. One could never forget watching every Milan fan`s idol Paolo Maldini tearing off his looser`s medal in despair. At the other hand it has to be the most remarkable comeback ever witnessed, and Liverpool truly deserved to be regarded as extraordinary.

Liverpool 3 – Milan 3 (AET, Liverpool won on penalties)

Milan: Maldini 1, Crespo 39, 44. No one in their wildest dreams could have imagined that Liverpool had it in them to sensationally overturn this game and clinch the unlikely victory.

(Of course this story wouldn`t be complete without mentioning Milan`s revenge in the 2007 final in Athens, when finally some pride has been restored.)

One of the biggest heartache any Milan fan ever had to endure came on the night of the 25th of May 2005. Who could`ve blamed him?

Liverpool: Dudek, Finnan (Hamann 46), Traore, Hyypia, Carragher, Riise, Gerrard, Luis Garcia, Alonso, Kewell (Smicer 23), Baros (Cisse 85).

Subs Not Used: Carson, Josemi, Nunez, Biscan. In the second half within seven minutes the Rossoneri dream was over and despite a sublime performance in extra time, Milan were unable to capitalize on their dominance. Arturo Vidal targets Champions League win with Bayern Munich

The Chilean reached the final of the competition with Juventus last year but believes the move to the Bavarian club gives him the best chance to win it

“Hopefully it will be this year, but I will spend several years here and hope to win 12bet as many cups as I possibly can.

The Chile international reached the Champions League final with the Serie A champions last season, but believes he has a better chance of winning the competition with Pep Guardiola’s men.

“I have come here to win the Champions League,” he told reporters.

Vidal made his official debut for Bayern on Saturday as they lost out on the first piece of silverware of the season to Wolfsburg in the DFB Supercup.

The 28-year-old previously enjoyed a spell in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen between 2007 and 2011.

“I will play in midfield the same way I did with the national team and with Juventus. That is where I feel more comfortable.”

Arturo Vidal says the chances of achieving European glory is what convinced him to leave Juventus for Bayern Munich as he is desperate to win the Champions League this season.

The Penn State Scandal

The arguments in favor of banning football are widely varied, but they came to light after several college football related scandals, including the Penn State child sex abuse scandal. Then-assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was accused in 2011 of having sexually abused several young boys. They serve mainly as extracurricular activities for students, and foster healthy intercollegiate competition. They have gone beyond extracurricular, and have become a sort of secondary function of their own. This would probably not be an improvement in the lives of professional football players.

Overall, it seems unlikely that college football is going away any time soon, but the issue might force us to think about the ways that college athletic departments could be improved.

In more than 20 years I’ve spent studying the issue, I have yet to hear a convincing argument that college football has anything do with what is presumably the primary purpose of higher education: academics.

–H.G. Some people say that, in schools with large football programs, coaches are overpaid, and have too much influence over what goes on at the schools. Although this incident might not have been directly related to college football in general, it brought the media’s attention to the existence of college football programs, and created space to discuss the pros and cons of these programs.

One of the scandalous elements of the Penn State affair was the role of head coach Joe Paterno. Many college football players go on to join the NFL, and football provides a way for students, staff, and alumni, to express their school pride, and to connect with the campus community.

Despite this long-standing tradition, some people are opposed to college football, and think it should be banned. Universities should be focusing on academics and education, instead of sports, some say.

Other College Sports

Many of the arguments supporting the abolition of college football could also be applied to other sports at the college level. Additionally, young athletes might have to go directly to the professional level, rather than attending college and earning degrees. Even people with no ties to universities are interested in college football, and consider it a favorite pastime. Millions of people would be sorely disappointed if college football went away. This is one argument in favor of banning college football.

Why Should College Football be Eliminated?

Of course, banning college football is probably not a very popular idea among the general public. Paterno was fired and died of lung cancer soon after. Some people accused Paterno of sheltering Sandusky from punishment, claiming that he and other high-level university officials knew about the illicit behavior, and did nothing. Bigger sports, like football and basketball, seem to be in a league of their own. Bissinger

Football and Funding

The issue of money extends beyond just the salaries of college football coaches. Even Jack Kerouac, the famous Beat Generation writer of On the Road and The Dharma Bums, played football at Columbia University, before dropping out. Amidst rising concern about player safety and the recent spate of scandals, these voices seem to be getting stronger by the day.. That’s why, the sport is so popular at the college level, which is why it is such a big money-maker for universities. If these sports programs can’t be scaled back to a more appropriate level, perhaps they should be eliminated altogether.

Do We Foresee a Ban in the Near Future?

College football is a time-honored American tradition. This incident caused some people to question the large amount of power football coaches have at many American universities. Some athletic programs are relatively small, and do not have a large impact on how universities function. Some people argue that this is counter to the purpose and intent of the university system. Universities promote their football programs in order to protect this revenue source–so much so, that some colleges are known more for their football programs than for their academic programs. For many universities, football is an important source of revenue, and helps them maintain state-of-the-art facilities, updated buildings, and well-kept grounds Read More

Former Giants pitcher Kasahara admits to betting: report
| Reuters

(Reporting by Nivedita Shankar in Bengaluru; Editing by Amlan Chakraborty)

Former Yomiuri Giants pitcher Shoki Kasahara has admitted to his involvement in illegal gambling at a hearing held at the Tokyo District Court on Monday, Kyodo news agency reported.

($1 = 101.3600 yen)

The NPB which prohibits professional players from betting on games, handed a one-year ban on another Giants pitcher Kyosuke Takagi for illegal betting in March.

The 25-year-old was suspended by Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), the country’s professional baseball governing body, in November for illegally betting on games, which included Major League Baseball and Japanese high school games.

Kasahara is said to have aided a former restaurant operator’s betting scheme by collecting money from two other former Giants players, and gambled a total of 1.2 million yen ($11,838.99) himself between September 2014 and August 2015, the report said. Read More

Predict Football Score Predictions - How to Correctly Predict Outcome of Football Matches and Win Your Football Bet

Predict Football Score Predictions

Predict Football Score Predictions

So, how does the small percentage of big winners manage to win their football bets over and over?

The secret lies in their systematic approach to betting on football. These experts realize something that most people do not, and that is, prediction football do not need to be accurate to the extremes with match results, but all they need is a prediction football system to tell them whether their bets have a good enough opportunity to beat the sports books’ handicap.

The key to their success, is in the systems which they use to know which bets are worth placing. Predict Football Score Predictions

Prediction football is more of a science than an art. Some of these football betting systems deliver strike rates up to 80% over an entire season, and is still being refined. As the saying goes, the ball is round, and there are factors in every game that can tilt the balance and the score line in an instant, so to regularly hit results perfectly in prediction football is certainly not possible. If you are serious about making money from football betting, then I say you join them and get yourself a profitable system right away.

Sports books determine football handicaps and odds based on a number of data which they have collected over the years, therefore, while most people think that they can perfectly master the skill of prediction football just by understanding the sport itself, only a very small number of people who bet on football manage to win money consistently. While a lot of people out there argue that football betting is won on factors like “gut feel”, “luck” and “experience”, the biggest winners that consistently make tons of money betting on football are still the ones who go about their “investments” in a scientific and systematic manner. Sports :: College Football - If You Thought SEC Was the Toughest NCAA Conference, Think Again

Again 3 of the 5 teams come from the Pac 10.

Please, do not give me this garbage about the SEC playing the toughest schedule. Turns out that I am right.

Another interesting fact of note is this: Since the NCAA established the Division 1A and 1AA separation in 1978, only 5 Division 1A schools have not played a Division 1AA school: Washington, Southern California, UCLA, Michigan State and Notre Dame. Who plays the tougher schedule between the top two dogs? It is easily the Pac 10.

Knowing that the SEC is legion for scheduling Division 1AA teams in its non-conference schedule, I suspect that the SEC’s strength of schedule (the quality of its opponents) may not be as strong. 1 among the 242 Division 1A and 1AA schools.

Sagarin rates all of the 242 individual 1A and 1AA teams and then combines them among conferences to arrive at these figures.

The SEC already has 7 of its 12 teams with 7 or more wins and bowl eligible by NCCA standards, and now you know one of the reasons why.

The “tough” SEC played exactly 10 Division 1AA opponents this season, more than any other conference in the country. By comparison, the Big 12 played 10, the ACC and Big Ten played 7 games, the Big East 6, and the Pac 10 only 2.

Ranked 11th among Division 1A conferences is Conference USA at 58.88. For the record, Nebraska is No. 5, so 3 of Top 5 teams in strength of schedule are from the Pac 10.

I read other factors into his mathematical formula for deciding which conference is the toughest (best) conference.

When I add up the strength of schedule for the 12 SEC teams I get an average of 30 compared to an average strength of schedule of 14 for the Pac 10. The facts and statistics say otherwise.

It is the same reason why Hawaii is unbeaten at 10-0, having defeated two 1AA schools in fattening up its impressive win record while racking up the 153rd toughest schedule against the other 119 Division 1A schools.

There is so much buzz and hype about the Southeast Conference–better known as the SEC–you would think there are no other NCAA football conferences that can compare.

If you are wondering, the team that has played the toughest schedule during the first 12 weeks of the 2007 college football season is the Washington Huskies, and that is why they are ranked No. Three 1AA conferences are then rated above the last 1A conference–the Sun Belt–at 58.26.

Sometimes a 1AA school can beat a 1A school (like Appalachian State beating Michigan at home 34-32), not because they are necessarily better but because the 1A school did not take them seriously.

Even Jeff Sagarin in his Sagarin Ratings lists the SEC as the top conference with a central mean (that is Sagarin math talk) of 79.89 with the Pacific 10–better known as the Pac 10–second at 79.19. 2, Stanford No. 4 and Colorado No. On a scale of 100 the difference is 70/100ths of 1, or close enough to not make a difference in my mind.

Pete Rose: I Bet On Reds "Every Night"

They wouldn’t let me go to the last game in Philadelphia (at Veterans Stadium) either.”

Pete Rose told ESPN Wednesday that he bet on the Reds “every night” while he was manager of the team in the late 1980s.

“I bet on my team every night,” he told ESPN’s Dan Patrick. I was wrong.”

“Everything should be for the fans,” Rose said Tuesday before a preview party celebrating Saturday’s opening of a special exhibit in his honor at the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. “They wouldn’t let me be on the field for the last game here (at Cinergy Field, the Reds’ previous home). His total is reflected at the Reds’ Hall in a three-story high wall of baseballs — one for each hit.

Wednesday’s revelation of nightly wagering comes after Rose said his fans would likely be “elated” if Major League Baseball reinstated him after his 18 years of exile.

“They could send a hit man after me, and I would still be out there trying to sell baseball. The new exhibit includes more that 300 items from the career of Rose, who finished playing in 1986 with an all-time high 4,256 hits. My name’s synonymous with baseball.”

© 2007 CBS Interactive Inc. “I didn’t bet on my team four nights a week. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. “If they retired my number here, don’t you think the fans would be elated?

“I’m just happy having three stories of balls. That’s a lot of balls,” said Rose, who spent almost three more seasons as Cincinnati’s manager before the league banned him in 1989 for betting on baseball.. 14. He couldn’t say whether he thought the current exhibit represented a softening of baseball’s stance regarding his ban.

Displayed at the news conference were the bat Rose used and the ball he hit when he stroked hit 4,192 to pass Ty Cobb and set the career hit record.

Several Rose-related artifacts have been on display at the Reds Hall of Fame since it debuted in 2004, a year after Great American Ball Park opened. In 1989, Rose, baseball’s all-time hit leader, accepted a lifetime ban from baseball for gambling, only to spend the next 15 years heatedly denying — at every opportunity — he bet on game he played with equal passion.

“You want to check and make sure there’s no cork in that bat?” he joked.

The confession wasn’t Rose’s first, reports CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian. Today, he admitted his gambling addiction was daily.

While much of his memorabilia has found its way into baseball’s Hall of Fame, Rose remains on the outside, looking in — ineligible for induction into Cooperstown or any activities involving the game, adds Keteyian.

Because of the ban, Rose is not allowed to be involved in most on-field activities, which has prevented the Reds from retiring his uniform No. MLB did include him in two events — 1999′s All-Century Team and 2002′s 30 Memorable Moments — that were sponsored by a credit card company. “I want to thank baseball for giving the permission to do this,” he said about the exhibit. In his autobiography, published in 2004, Rose revealed that he wagered many times a week while managing Read More

College football – This Just In

We will do what we can as coaches, teammates, and friends to get him on a path where he can have success. Honey badgers are known to scrap with animals many times their size, including lions, and even tangle (successfully) with poisonous snakes.

Despite missing the game, Mathieu was still a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, awarded to college football’s best player, as a sophomore. We are going to miss him.”

Said the Dallas Cowboys’ Morris Claiborne, a former teammate of Mathieu’s: “Tyrann deserved the nickname …

The sports network had to add an editor’s note, saying, “This story was published prior to Tyrann Mathieu’s dismissal from LSU’s football program on August 10.”

Mathieu and the others were suspended for their team’s game against Auburn.

The team, which played in last year’s national college football championship game, announced this afternoon that their top player and arguably the nation’s best cornerback, Tyrann Mathieu, has been dismissed for violating team policy.

LSU did not say which team rule Mathieu broke. However, with that being said, we have a standard that our players are held to and when that standard is not met, there are consequences.”

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Mathieu got his nickname for his fearlessness on the gridiron. “We lose a quality person, teammate and contributor to the program. In addition to winning the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the top defensive player, he came in fifth in Heisman voting with 34 first-place votes and was the only defensive player among 10 finalists.. because the honey badger takes what it wants, and Tyrann takes what he wants on the field,” ESPN reported today in a profile.

“This is a very difficult day for our team,” head coach Les Miles said. ESPN reported at the time that the trio tested positive for synthetic marijuana.

It’s been said that Honey Badger don’t care, but what may be more accurate is that Honey Badger don’t play – at least not for the LSU Tigers.

According to LSU, the Columbus, Ohio, native who attended high school in New Orleans, has registered 133 tackles – 16 for a loss – in 26 games for the Tigers. The 20-year-old All-American ran into trouble last year when he and two other players violated the team’s drug policy. He also has four picks, 11 forced fumbles and eight fumble recoveries, as well as four touchdowns, two on punt returns and two on fumble returns.

The Good, Bad and Ugly About the Commercialization of Amateur Sports

One characteristic of creeping sports commercialization among young athletes is that it distorts, or even destroys, people and institutions it touches. Great college basketball players like Bill Bradley of Princeton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of UCLA, and Pat Riley of Kentucky, who got college degrees, had great professional basketball careers, but had even better post-basketball lives due to their education.

Commercialization enables retired, but still famous, athletes to supplement meager post-career earnings. While most publicity is about concussions, with baseball recently creating a 7-day disabled list for concussion victims, the cumulative impact of years of violence to athletes’ bodies is a more serious issue. Commercialization radically changes the economic benefit of winning for the young athlete, the coaches and parents. They do not secure educations, as evidenced by the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team’s 30% graduation rate. Sports betting is more financially lucrative than the sports themselves. In recent years, ESPN has broadcast the Little League baseball playoffs and World Series. Some boys ended up having great college experiences, but there were avoidable tragedies, including one boy who was housed with a pedophilic coach and became a convicted criminal because of the commercial opportunity his mother found too good to pass up.

Several events have caused me to think about creeping sports commercialization: the increasingly lucrative NCAA tournament and the increasing sense that college basketball is a one-year commercial way station for athletes on the way to professional basketball; Barry Bonds’ perjury trial relative to his use of performance-enhancing drugs; business-sponsored teams beginning spring baseball practice; and continuing publicity about sports concussions.

Sadly, violence is also likely to remain a permanent part of the sports landscape, although we can make rules changes that, over time, reduce its severity and frequency. Organized youth sports programs displace more broadly based recreational sports programs. Professional sports are of high quality and are great entertainment.

This is a time to celebrate great athletic performances; it is also time for reflection on sports’ roles in young peoples’ lives.

George Dohrmann recently wrote about basketball’s commercialization for boys as young as 9 years old in his book Playing Their Hearts Out. Adult-led commercialization exacerbates the competitive tendencies of young athletes to risk injuries by raising the economic stakes of success.

College basketball and football, both revenue-producing sports, effectively rent star players for one year, secure significant revenues for college programs, showcase players for professional teams, and help coaches secure multimillion dollar salaries.

The commercialization that troubles me is what has crept into youth and college sports. It spotlights young pitchers who throw curve balls that significantly increase the risk of permanent arm and shoulder damage. I support efforts to curb cheating through substance abuse, because it does permanent damage to users, but eliminating performance-enhancing substances is unlikely.

I do not begrudge professional team owners or athletes the economic rewards they have secured. An adult can decide to risk injury to his or her body; an 11-year-old should not be pushed to use athletic techniques that create injury risks he does not understand.

However, commercialization has many ugly sides, some old, some new. I was thrilled to meet Lee Elder, the first black golfer invited to participate in the Masters Tournament and one of the most inspiring and courageous athletes in the 20th century, at the NAACP Celebrity Image Awards Golf Challenge at which we showed clips of From the Rough.

Commercialization enables many people to participate in otherwise unaffordable recreational sports. I directly support research to enable us to understand the multiple causes of neurological damage from violent hits to the head.

. We will never eliminate its lure. Local businesses like the Baskin & Robbins store and Dunkin’ Donuts franchises have long enabled young people to secure uniforms and be part of sports teams. He followed a cohort of 20 boys and their families and coaches in Southern California over eight years. The use of performance-enhancing substances has always been with us, and probably always will be: Too much money is at stake. Michael Sokolove wrote about this in a recent article in the Sunday New York Times Magazine, entitled “Is It Dunk and Done for Perry Jones?,” in which he said that college basketball may not matter any more. College admission programs select poorly educated athletes who stay in college for 1-2 years, instead of highly qualified students who could help us overcome our global competitiveness gaps in science, business, and education Read More

Sports betting vs. the stock market: Which is riskier?

“A lot of people regard investing as gambling, but I frequently say no. And of course, they both hate to lose.

Those are pretty good odds.

Such hedging tools are not as readily or even feasible to sports gamblers, Fine said.

To put it another way, the stock market is a lot more forgiving than the MGM Grand (let alone your local sports bookie).

Even the unlucky investors who jumped into the market at its peak in October 2007 eventually made their money back when stocks reclaimed their pre-recession levels in 2013.

. Which casino in Atlantic City, Las Vegas or Macau pays the bettor 73% of the time?” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at S&P Capital IQ. The stock might go up and down some, but it typically doesn’t go to zero. People often invest in funds that buy dozens or even hundreds of stocks, which helps reduce the risk.

However, someone sinking $500 into Apple stock has little risk of losing that entire initial investment, especially in the short term.

A stock can theoretically be held onto for an infinite amount of time, but a sports bet can end in the blink of an eye.

“Betting is more difficult and riskier,” said one resident of Hoboken, New Jersey, who bets on illegal gambling sites and also invests in stocks.

“You’re making a wager based on some facts and some intuitions.

But don’t let those similarities fool you.

But take it from one person who has lots of experience in both worlds.

In the long run, investors have the chance to make more money because there are fewer downside risks. Heck, even his commercials are funny.

“A large, steady company has a low chance of plummeting and causing you to lose all your money, but even Peyton Manning doesn’t cover the spread sometimes,” he said.

“You can hold onto your betting tickets all your life, but you’re not going to get squat,” said Stovall.

Gamblers and investors also have far different time horizons. A bettor gambling on the Green Bay Packers will instantly lose his or her entire $500 bet if Aaron Rodgers and his teammates fail to win or cover the spread. For example, a stop-loss order instructs a broker to dump a stock when it tumbles below a specific price.

And investors have greater access to tools that can minimize the risk of losing money. While many stocks offer steady returns, investors sometimes hit the jackpot (think: buying Apple back in early 2009 or Tesla in 2012). Gambling on football star Peyton Manning to win might seem like a safe bet, especially compared with picking winners in the stock market. And in neither instance can you be guaranteed to be correct,” said Randall Fine, managing director of The Fine Point Group, one of the casino industry’s largest consulting firms.

At the same time, investing in stocks actually carries higher upside potential.

The betting appeal: Americans bet an estimated $380 billion each year on sports.

Investors also have the ability to spread their money out among many stocks.

That’s the percentage of time that Stovall’s research shows the S&P 500 — the gold standard in the stock market — has increased in value during the years since 1926. He asked for his identity to be withheld due to legal concerns. It’s easy to see why fans may be tempted to gamble on their favorite teams and athletes. Gambling on sports may be more fun, but it’s definitely a more risky use of money than putting it in the stock market.

Manning is really, really good at what he does for a living.

They both believe they can predict the future, and they sometimes fall into the trap of making decisions with their hearts instead of their brains.

The same can’t be said for those who bet big on the Denver Broncos last Super Bowl.
